Tobias Ellwood Quits as Defence Committee Chair Amid No-Confidence Storm
Ellwood Bows Out Before Vote
Tobias Ellwood has sensationally resigned as chairman of the Defence Committee. The Conservative ex-defence minister stepped down ahead of a looming no-confidence vote triggered by row over his Afghanistan remarks.
Ellwood admitted his comments were “understandably criticised” but insisted he had the backing of most committee members. Still, he admitted without full support, his position was “a distracting issue.”
Criticism Over Afghanistan Comments
Ellwood’s downfall stems from his summer claim that security in Afghanistan had “vastly improved” and corruption had declined since the Taliban’s return in 2021. He controversially pushed for Britain to reopen its Kabul embassy, following the EU’s lead.
His words sparked outrage among cross-party MPs, who accused him of misjudging the situation. Despite issuing an apology, Ellwood faced a no-confidence motion from powerful voices, including Conservative Mark Francois and Labour’s Kevan Jones.
Ellwood Speaks Out on Twitter
“It is with deep regret that I have tendered my resignation as Chair of the Defence Committee,” Ellwood posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I believe I have a strong voice when it comes to defence and security. I stand up, speak my mind, try to see the bigger picture and offer solutions, especially on the international stage, as our world turns a dangerous corner.”
Committee Turmoil and What Next?
The no-confidence notice was submitted on July 19, with the 10-day deadline expiring this Thursday, prompting Ellwood’s pre-emptive exit. The shake-up highlights deep fractures within the committee over UK policy on Afghanistan and its future role in defence oversight.
As the fallout continues, eyes now turn to who will replace Ellwood and steer the committee through this turbulent period.
