A 24-year-old Groote Eylandt man has been slammed with a 16-month prison sentence after unleashing chaos on a flight from Cairns to his home island in April 2023. The violent outburst left the aircraft damaged to the tune of over $7,000 and traumatised passengers and crew.
Violent Flight Horror Shakes Passengers
The unnamed man pleaded guilty at Darwin Local Court on September 21 to multiple serious charges. His terrifying behaviour erupted mid-flight on 20 April, turning a routine trip into a nightmare. Witnesses heard loud bangs resembling gunshots as he became aggressive and verbally abusive, even targeting crew members with homophobic slurs.
The situation escalated when he physically attacked fellow passengers and caused significant damage to the aircraft. Despite crew efforts, he refused to calm down or follow instructions, forcing an emergency response by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
Serious Charges and Tough Words from Police
The AFP wasted no time arresting the man, charging him with a slew of offences including:
- Endangering the safety of an aircraft
- Affray on an aircraft
- Assault occasioning bodily harm
- Contravening a domestic violence order
- Offensive conduct
AFP Superintendent Greg Davis made it clear such behaviour won’t be tolerated. “Police and airline workers are there to ensure the safety of passengers,” he said. “Anyone choosing to behave poorly on an aircraft will be dealt with accordingly.”
