Greater Manchester Police Investigate Firearms Discharge Incident In Leigh, Wigan

In the early hours of Sunday, September 24, 2023, an incident involving a firearms discharge has prompted an investigation by Greater Manchester Police. The incident occurred at approximately 01.00 on St Helens Road in Leigh, Wigan.

According to authorities, the incident was the result of an attempted assault between two men, during which a stolen vehicle was reportedly used. Subsequently, it is believed that the other individual involved discharged a firearm on four occasions.

Swiftly responding to the reports, law enforcement initiated an investigation into the matter. As a result, two men, aged 30 and 27, along with a 27-year-old woman, have been apprehended in connection with this incident. They are currently in police custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Simon Hurst, from GMP’s Wigan District, provided some insights into the situation, stating, “This is obviously a concerning incident for the local community, but we strongly believe it was a targeted and isolated attack. Thankfully, no one has been seriously injured, including any members of the public, and despite the concern around a viable firearm being used, we have made good progress in the early stages of our investigation.”

As the investigation unfolds, several scenes related to the incident will remain secured by law enforcement throughout the day. This is to facilitate further inquiries and to provide reassurance patrols within the affected area.

Detective Superintendent Hurst urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, saying, “If anyone has information or details about this incident we are investigating, please make direct contact by calling 0161 856 7094 or 101, quoting log 228 of 24/09/2023.
