Zane Robertson Bailed in Kenya Amid Shocking Attempted Rape Charges
Disgraced Kiwi runner Zane Robertson has been slapped with bail in Kenya while facing serious allegations, including attempted rape. The Kenyan court has ordered him to hand over his passport and stay put.
Runner Under Fire: Bail Set at £11,000
Robertson, 33, who’s currently serving an eight-year doping ban, has been in custody since his arrest on September 20 in Iten, Kenya. The local magistrate slapped him with a hefty bail of two million Kenyan shillings (around $13,500/£11,000) and an equal surety.
Magistrate Emily Kigen was clear: “The accused will not be allowed to travel outside Kenya without court permission.”
Serious Charges Stack Up
- Attempted rape
- Possession of an unlicensed firearm
- Possession of illicit drugs
Police reportedly found unlicensed guns and drugs at Robertson’s home after the rape complaint surfaced. Despite the charges, Robertson vigorously denies all allegations against him.
Legal Battle Rumbles On
Robertson’s next court hearing is fixed for October 23. More details are expected as the investigation unfolds.
This scandal isn’t the Kiwi star’s first brush with the law or controversy. Back in March, New Zealand’s Sports Tribunal banned him for eight years following doping violations, including possession of EPO, a banned performance enhancer, and tampering with evidence.
The fall from grace for once-promising long-distance runner Robertson shows no sign of slowing down.
