Bomb Horror Outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital
A homemade bomb blast outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital on November 14, 2021, left bomber Emad Al Swealmeen dead but miraculously spared the life of taxi driver David Perry. The 32-year-old detonated the device moments before 11am while inside Perry’s taxi, unleashing chaos and carnage.
Hospital Scene Caught on CCTV
Footage shows the terrifying blast sending ball bearings flying through the taxi. The bomb’s force smashed the front windscreen, which was hurled 16 metres into a nearby tree. Windows of the hospital building also shattered in the explosion.
Grudge Against UK Asylum System
Police investigations reveal Al Swealmeen acted out of a bitter grievance after his asylum claim was rejected. Detective Superintendent Andy Meeks of Counter Terrorism Policing North West explained:
“It seems most likely that Al Swealmeen’s grievance against the British state for failing to accept his asylum claim compounded his mental ill health which in turn fed that grievance and ultimately a combination of those factors led him to undertake the attack.”
Despite initial fears, police found no evidence Al Swealmeen held extremist views. He reportedly planned to detonate the bomb inside the hospital but triggered it prematurely. Authorities confirmed no one else was involved.
Iraqi Asylum Seeker’s Troubled Past
Born in Iraq, Al Swealmeen went to great lengths to stay in the UK, including converting to Christianity, though doubts lingered over the sincerity of the change. The report highlighted his worsening mental health, a failed asylum claim, and lack of close family support as contributing factors.
Investigators noted Al Swealmeen took careful steps to hide his true intentions, leaving questions about his exact motives. But one thing remains clear – a man desperate, troubled, and pushed to a deadly breaking point.
