Speed Demon Jailed for Fatal Head-On Crash in Sheffield
Ryan Naughton, 40, has been slammed with an eight-year prison sentence and an 11-year driving ban after a deadly head-on crash in Sheffield.
Reckless Overtake Ends in Tragedy
On September 9, 2021, just before noon on Harborough Avenue, Naughton was speeding in his VW Golf through a residential area. Attempting a dangerous overtake, he smashed into a taxi carrying elderly couple Eileen and Richard Epton. The 83-year-old Mrs. Epton tragically died, while her 68-year-old husband suffered serious injuries.
Judge Condemns ‘Highly Dangerous’ Driving
At Sheffield Crown Court, Naughton pleaded guilty to causing death and injury by dangerous driving. Recorder Jeremy Richardson KC blasted Naughton for driving at nearly double the speed limit and ignoring the risks of his reckless manoeuvres. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and cannot get behind the wheel again until passing an extended driving test.
Police Demand Tough Justice for Road Killers
“This sentencing sees a dangerous and irresponsible individual off our streets,” said PC Natalie Booler from the Serious Collisions Unit. “While nothing can undo the grief caused to the Epton family, we hope this offers some closure and sends a clear message that dangerous driving will be prosecuted to the fullest.”
