£200 Million Prison Boost: Hundreds of New Cells Coming to Four Jails
Get ready for a major shake-up in England’s prison system. HMP Guys Marsh (Dorset), Rye Hill (Warwickshire), Stocken (Rutland), and High Down (Surrey) are set for massive upgrades, including more houseblocks and a new workshop. It’s all part of a whopping £2.5 billion plan to build 10,000 modern prison places nationwide.
930+ New Places to Help Cut Crime and Create Jobs
The new builds will add over 930 places across the four sites. Work on this £200 million project aims to keep the construction industry buzzing despite the pandemic. Plus, scores of long-term jobs will be created behind bars, giving prisoners more chances to learn skills and avoid reoffending.
Prisoners Arriving from Winter 2022, Work Kicks Off Soon
Planning permission is underway, with Rye Hill jail expecting to welcome its first new inmates from Winter 2022. The other prisons will follow throughout 2023. Here’s the breakdown of added capacity:
- HMP Guys Marsh: 180 extra places
- HMP Rye Hill: 462 extra places
- HMP Stocken: 206 extra places (adding to a houseblock opened in 2019)
- HMP High Down: New workshop freeing space for 90 more places
Government’s Vision: Modern Jails, Tougher Sentences, and Rehab
“This significant step in our plan to transform the prison estate shows the government’s intention to invest in infrastructure, create jobs and to build back better for this country,” said Prisons and Probation Minister Lucy Frazer QC MP.
“The new houseblocks will provide modern environments where we can effectively rehabilitate offenders and steer them away from crime.”
The upgrades align with a sweeping sentencing shake-up set out in last month’s landmark White Paper. The reforms will see the most serious criminals locked up for longer.
On top of these improvements, four brand-new prisons will be built in the next six years. One is already planned at HMP Full Sutton, East Yorkshire, with more site picks underway in the North-West and South-East. Meanwhile, work is moving fast on HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire and early stages have begun at Glen Parva, Leicestershire, aiming to add nearly 1,700 category C resettlement places.
This massive prison expansion drive combines infrastructure investment with a focus on rehabilitation to cut crime — and is set to shake up the justice system for years to come.
