Traumatised Refugee Kids Fleeing to Armenia Show Alarming Signs of Mental Distress

Refugee children who have just arrived in Armenia are showing serious psychological scars, social workers warn. These youngsters and their families escaped escalating violence in their homes in recent weeks.

Nightmares, Tears and Emotional Shutdown

In two safe spaces set up by UNICEF and partners in Goris, social workers report kids battling intense fear, anxiety, anger, and sadness. Symptoms include nightmares, bedwetting, and uncontrollable crying. Some children are so overwhelmed they’ve emotionally shut down, struggling to express themselves or connect with others.

Over 30,000 Armenian Kids Displaced by Rising Hostilities

  • More than 30,000 ethnic Armenian children have fled to Armenia since violence flared up.
  • They face disrupted education and unsafe living conditions.
  • Families live in constant fear of attacks.

UNICEF Warns of Long-Term Damage Without Help

“Displacement, hostilities, and deprivation have severely affected these children’s physical and mental health,” says Christine Weigand, UNICEF Armenia Representative. “Without ongoing support, they risk lasting harm from these traumatic experiences.”

The scale of suffering is huge, and urgent care is needed to shield these vulnerable kids from a bleak future.
