A 44-year-old man, Ahmed Alid, is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning, facing charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a violent street attack that claimed the life of 70-year-old Terrence Carney.
The tragic incident unfolded in Hartlepool town centre on Sunday morning when Carney, who had just used a cash machine, became the victim of a fatal assault. The accused, Ahmed Alid, hailing from Hartlepool, has been charged with the murder of Carney and the attempted murder of another man. Alid was charged at approximately 22.00 on Monday following a comprehensive investigation jointly conducted by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and Cleveland Police.
Law enforcement had responded to a call at around 05:17 to a property on Wharton Terrace, where a man had been attacked. Although he sustained non-life-threatening injuries, he remains hospitalised. Subsequently, officers discovered Terrence Carney seriously injured in Tees Street, approximately half a mile away. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency services, Carney succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, assured the public that this was an isolated incident, stating, “We are satisfied that this was an isolated incident and are not seeking anyone else in connection with this matter.” He expressed gratitude for the community’s support during the investigation.
Deputy Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police commended the bravery of the attending officers and extended gratitude to the local community for their support. She emphasised their thoughts remaining with the family of Mr. Carney and the second man involved in Sunday’s incident.
