Police are appealing for information after a disturbing incident of arson took place in Kirkby last night. On Monday, 16 October, at approximately 20.15 BST, a youth reportedly fired a firework towards the twelfth-floor balcony of a block of flats on Roughwood Road, resulting in the ignition of nearby rubbish.

The prompt response from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service ensured the fire was extinguished swiftly. The building was then safely evacuated, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In light of this reckless act, a joint investigation is currently underway by the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the Merseyside Police. Authorities are urging anyone with any information regarding the incident to come forward and contact the police.

Community Inspector Andy Robinson expressed his concern, stating, “This was a totally reckless thing to do and is wholly unacceptable where the lives of residents were put in serious danger. Thankfully no one was hurt from this mindless act which could have ended in a fatality.”

Inspector Robinson further appealed to individuals who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident, urging them to come forward if they witnessed the incident or possess any information that may aid the ongoing investigation.

“It is important to remind everyone that not only is this a criminal offence, but it is also illegal for individuals under the age of 18 to purchase, carry, or use fireworks. Additionally, it is against the law to discharge or throw fireworks in a public place,” Inspector Robinson emphasised.

He warned of the potential consequences, stating that those involved in such criminal behavior could face arrest, fines, a criminal record, or even imprisonment. Parents and guardians were also reminded that they could be held responsible for any fines incurred by their children under the age of 16.

Authorities are urging parents and guardians to be aware of the whereabouts of young people under their care in order to assist in dealing with those who engage in such mindless acts.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses any information is encouraged to contact the Merseyside Police via direct message on Twitter @MerPolCC or through Facebook at ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre,’ referencing the incident number 23001017725.
