UK Firefighters Rush to Greece as Wildfires Rage Unchecked

British firefighters are jetting off this weekend to battle devastating wildfires tearing through Greece. The deployment comes at the urgent request of Home Secretary Priti Patel, who made the call as the blazes continue to wreak havoc amid the country’s worst heatwave in 30 years.

Elite Teams From Across UK Join the Fight

Fire crews from Merseyside, Lancashire, South Wales, London, and West Midlands are heading to Athens to join forces with Greek emergency services. The National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) National Resilience team is leading the mission, bringing fully self-sufficient experts ready to tackle the fires without straining local resources.

“I am immensely grateful to the brave firefighters for stepping forward and volunteering to help. Their expertise will be invaluable in supporting the Greek emergency services.”– Home Secretary Priti Patel

UK Fire Chiefs Proud to Stand Shoulder to Shoulder with Greece

Mark Hardingham, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, praised the swift response: “The UK Fire and Rescue Service is committed to supporting our colleagues and communities in Greece during these devastating wildfires. Our National Resilience team is highly skilled in extreme events at home and abroad. Helping out when disaster strikes is in the very fabric of our fire service.”

Scorching Heat and Fierce Winds Fuel Crisis

The wildfires are driving from a brutal heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in many regions. Strong winds and high temperatures forecast over the coming days threaten to fan more flames, exacerbating the emergency.
