Police Probe After Beloved Heron Found Dead in Sheffield

Police are hunting for witnesses after a well-known heron was discovered dead in Sheffield’s Greystones area. The bird, a favourite among local bird watchers, was last seen alive fishing in the pool near Shepherd Wheel on Thursday 29 December around lunchtime.

Bird Spotted Before Sudden Death

The heron had been happily fishing between Bluebell Wood and Whiteley Woods, part of the busy Porter Brook and Whiteley Woods trail – a hotspot for walkers over the holiday period. But by that evening, the bird was found lifeless among the undergrowth.

Investigation Underway into Mysterious Death

Herons are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making this a serious incident. Wildlife crime officers swooped in, seizing the bird for examination. Local vets carried out X-rays which revealed multiple puncture wounds to the head, hinting at an attack. However, this damage might have happened after death. The exact cause remains unclear as inquiries continue with partner agencies.
