Crime Crackdown Hits Crawley Town Centre

Crawley Town Centre is buzzing with police action following the launch of two bold new crime-busting initiatives. Within just a week, officers have made multiple arrests, thanks to a clever community engagement pod and a robust anti-crime partnership.

Community Pod Brings Police Closer to Crawley Residents

Inspector Steve Turner revealed the fresh initiative is already paying off. The community engagement pod, stationed right in the busy High Street, has become a go-to spot for locals seeking help or just a chat. Staffed by police, PCSOs, council officials, and Business Crime Reduction reps, the pod boosts safety and keeps criminals wary.

“We are already seeing the benefits and presence of the pod after just a week,” said Inspector Turner. “Our aim is to provide reassurance in the community and build a stronger, safer Crawley for everyone.”

‘Stronger, Safer Crawley’ Initiative Nets Arrests

Working alongside the community pod, the ‘Stronger, Safer Crawley’ campaign is cracking down hard on serious and organised crime. Arrests include:

  • Kyle Matthews, 21, from Brighton, caught on 31 October for handbag theft in Queensway. Court date: 15 November at Crawley Magistrates’ Court.
  • A 30-year-old Billingshurst man arrested for suspected possession of Class A drugs.
  • A 32-year-old Charlwood man suspected of grievous bodily harm.
  • A 13-year-old Crawley boy suspected of carrying a knife.

Thirteen people were also stopped and searched, resulting in drug seizures.

Community Events to Promote Safety and Unity

Music could be the antidote to crime, with local partner Audio Active hosting youth gigs at the bandstand on 22 November and 11 December. Superintendent Nick Dias said:

“Our new schemes aren’t just about boosting police presence. They aim to prevent crime, with community events playing a key role. The community is our priority.”

Councillor Yasmin Khan, Cabinet member for Public Protection, praised the pod’s early success:

“The engagement that police, council staff and partners have seen is helping to make the area safe for all.”

With crime-fighting and community spirit ramping up, Crawley Town Centre looks set for safer streets ahead.
