Warning: Steer Clear of Loan Sharks This Christmas!

Detectives are sounding the alarm: avoid illegal money lenders, aka loan sharks, as the festive season looms. They may seem helpful at first, but beware – sky-high interest rates can trap you in serious financial trouble.

Loan Sharks: No Legal Safety Net

Debts to loan sharks aren’t recognised by the courts. This means borrowers have no legal route to escape or reduce what they owe. Instead, loan sharks turn to intimidation, threats, and even violence to get their money back, leaving victims terrified and isolated.

Who Falls Victim? Everyone’s at Risk

Loan sharking isn’t just small-time crooks—it can be big organised crime gangs preying on the vulnerable. Research from the Centre for Social Justice shows most victims already struggle with low income, reliance on benefits, poor health, or mounting debts. Some are homeowners juggling business costs or cash flow problems.

Detective Inspector Rob Brown’s Stark Warning

“Loan sharks exploit financial hardship at every turn. Many now operate online, targeting victims under the radar. Some even bankroll serious organised crime,” says DI Brown of the Economic Crime Team.

He urges the public: don’t fall for seemingly easy money. Loans from these predators come with invisible chains—repayments can spiral out of control, with demands ranging from cash to drugs, referrals, or worse.

Help and Support: You’re Not Alone

Police and charities are fighting back.

  • Report loan sharks anonymously anytime via the 24/7 Stop Loan Sharks helpline, online forms, or text.
  • The Illegal Money Lending Team and Merseyside Police’s Economic Crime Team are ready to help victims.
  • Citizens Advice offers guidance and support to get out of debt traps.

Stop Loan Sharks also has a free app on iOS and Android. It flags warning signs like loans without paperwork, outrageous interest rates, and threats. The app connects victims to vital resources and confidential help.

Speak Up and Stay Safe

If you suspect a loan shark is targeting you or someone you know, act now. Call Merseyside Police on 101, contact the Stop Loan Sharks helpline, or report anonymously to Crimestoppers UK. Don’t let loan sharks ruin your Christmas or your life.
