Portsmouth Cathedral’s Midnight Mass to Be Broadcast Live on BBC One

Portsmouth Cathedral is thrilled to announce that its Midnight Mass service on Christmas Eve will be broadcast live on BBC One. This exceptional opportunity allows millions of viewers across the country and beyond to share in the joy and hope of the season. The service will encompass cherished carols, readings, and prayers, creating a heartwarming atmosphere for all.

The Dean of Portsmouth, The Very Revd Dr. Anthony Cane, will introduce and lead the service, with The Bishop of Portsmouth, The Rt Revd Dr. Jonathan Frost, delivering the sermon.

Dr. Anthony Cane expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We are honoured and excited to welcome the BBC to our Cathedral for this special service. We hope the broadcast will bring comfort and joy to all who watch it as we celebrate the love of God embodied in the infant Christ at this special time of year. All are invited to worship with us; as with our carol services, no special booking is required for Midnight Mass. We look forward to welcoming you to Portsmouth Cathedral this Christmas, whether you join us in person or on television.”

The Cathedral Choir, consisting of boy and girl choristers, will be under the direction of Dr. David Price and will perform beloved carols, including “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” During the service, the choristers will premiere a new version of ‘The First Nowell’ written and composed by Bob Chilcott. Members of The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will accompany the renowned Portsmouth Cathedral Choir for this special service.

Attendees are required to arrive between 10:15 pm and no later than 11:15 pm. All are welcome to attend in person, and there is no need to book in advance. For those who prefer to enjoy the service from the comfort of their homes, it will be available on BBC One and iPlayer. Stay tuned to the Cathedral’s social media channels for updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Portsmouth Cathedral will also host several other services throughout December, including Carol Services on December 21, 22, and 23, Christingle, and Crib services. Additionally, the Cathedral will feature a variety of events, including festive film screenings with favourites such as Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Home Alone.
