Portsmouth Cathedral’s Midnight Mass Goes Prime Time on BBC One

Portsmouth Cathedral is set to light up Christmas Eve with its Midnight Mass broadcast live on BBC One. Millions nationwide will tune in to soak up the festive cheer, featuring timeless carols, heartfelt readings, and prayers that capture the spirit of the season.

Top Clergy Lead the Festive Service

The Very Revd Dr Anthony Cane, Dean of Portsmouth, will open and lead the service, while The Rt Revd Dr Jonathan Frost, Bishop of Portsmouth, delivers the sermon. Dr Cane said, “We are honoured and excited to welcome the BBC to our Cathedral for this special service. We hope the broadcast will bring comfort and joy to all who watch it as we celebrate the love of God embodied in the infant Christ at this special time of year.”

He added, “All are invited to worship with us; no special booking is required for Midnight Mass. Whether you join us in person or on television, we look forward to welcoming you this Christmas.”

Festival Favourites and Exclusive Premieres

The renowned Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, featuring both boy and girl choristers under Dr David Price’s direction, will perform cherished carols like “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” Fans can look forward to the debut of a fresh arrangement of “The First Nowell” composed by Bob Chilcott.

Adding to the splendour, The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will provide stirring musical backing, promising a majestic Christmas celebration.
