UK Junior Doctors Launch Biggest NHS Strike Ever

Junior doctors across the UK are in the throes of their second day of a massive six-day strike – the longest the NHS has ever faced. This unprecedented action has pushed hospitals to breaking point, with numerous NHS trusts declaring critical incidents amid soaring demand.

Hospitals at Breaking Point as A&E Units Overload

Prime Minister Boris Johnson pleaded with junior doctors to call off the strike, warning of the mounting pressure on emergency services. More than a dozen hospitals are struggling to cope, including Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, which declared a critical incident after its A&E department hit full capacity.

Nottingham’s NHS Integrated Care Board has also flagged a critical incident, citing “significant pressures on services.” Across the country, A&E waiting times have soared, with one hospital reporting delays of up to 11 hours.

Strike Stalemate: Junior Doctors Hold Their Ground

Despite the government’s urgent appeals, junior doctors remain firm on their demands. Attempts to force doctors back through derogation requests have largely failed, with only one still under consideration by the union.

The government’s approach has sparked a mixed response. Chancellor Rishi Sunak voiced support for NHS leaders, emphasising their duty to patient care. But a coalition of celebrities and NHS workers are pushing Sunak for an emergency plan to tackle the exploding waiting lists.

Waiting Lists Soar Amid Health Crisis

  • Waiting lists have ballooned from 6.08 million in January 2023 to 6.44 million in October.
  • Pending treatments have jumped from 7.21 million to 7.71 million in the same period.

With millions stuck waiting for care, fears about patient wellbeing are growing. Dr Vin Diwakar, NHS England director, warned the strike’s fallout could last weeks, citing lost doctor hours and delayed appointments. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins called on the junior doctors’ union to end the strikes and return to negotiations.

Pay Disputes Fuel Ongoing NHS Chaos

Last summer’s govt offer of an 8.8% average pay rise failed to settle junior doctors’ grievances, sparking the current walkout. Meanwhile, consultants and speciality doctors have reached a tentative pay deal awaiting member approval – leaving junior doctors isolated in their fight.
