A dramatic police chase in Rainham has resulted in a tragic incident, leaving a taxi driver seriously injured and sparking a major investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

The incident unfolded when two unmarked police vehicles from the Met Police were involved in a pursuit of a car that failed to stop for officers and run a red light at the junction with Manor Way.

The fleeing vehicle ultimately collided with a taxi, causing extensive damage and life-threatening injuries to the taxi driver.

The collision occurred on New Road, leading to a road closure in both directions as emergency services rushed to the scene. London Fire Brigade, the London Ambulance Service, and officers from the Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage were among the responders who arrived just after 9 pm on Monday 22nd January 2024.

Witnesses at the scene reported a chaotic and distressing scene, with the injured taxi driver receiving immediate medical attention.

Paramedics reportedly carried out cycles of CPR in their efforts to stabilise the injured driver. Subsequently, the injured man was assessed by HEMS doctors from the London Air Ambulance and transported to a London Trauma Centre.
