A Metropolitan Police volunteer, Special Constable (SC) Sergeant Ben Smith, has been acquitted of sexual assault charges after a case brought against him was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

SC Smith had been charged with sexual assault against two females, alleged to have occurred off duty in April 2017. The incidents were reported to the Met in 2022, leading to legal proceedings against him.

On Wednesday, February 7, SC Smith appeared at Woolwich Crown Court, where the case was ultimately discontinued by the CPS.

SC Smith is attached to the south east command unit within the Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson for the Met stated that now that the criminal proceedings have concluded, misconduct matters related to the case will be considered. Despite the acquittal, SC Smith remains suspended from duty pending further internal processes.
