Met Police Volunteer Cleared of Sexual Assault Charges

Special Constable Sergeant Ben Smith, a volunteer with the Metropolitan Police, has been acquitted after sexual assault charges against him were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Old Allegations Spark 2022 Investigation

Smith faced allegations from two women, claiming assaults occurred off duty in April 2017. The complaints only came to light in 2022, prompting police investigation and legal action.

Case Discontinued at Woolwich Crown Court

On February 7, SC Smith appeared at Woolwich Crown Court where the CPS decided to discontinue the case, ending the criminal proceedings against him.

Met to Probe Misconduct Despite Acquittal

Smith, attached to the Metropolitan Police’s south east command unit, remains suspended. A Met spokesperson confirmed misconduct inquiries related to the case will continue internally, despite the acquittal.
