Codeine Linctus Banned from Over-the-Counter Sale!
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has taken a bold step to protect the public. Codeine linctus, a popular dry cough syrup, is now prescription-only. Once easy to get from your local pharmacy, it now requires approval from a healthcare professional.
Why the Crackdown?
Codeine linctus is an opioid, and the MHRA fears abuse, addiction, and deadly overdoses. The syrup has been linked to dangerous recreational misuse, including the concoction known as ‘Purple Drank.’
Dr Alison Cave, MHRA’s Chief Safety Officer, said: “While codeine linctus works for dry cough, its opioid nature brings serious health risks when misused.”
The decision followed a massive consultation with nearly 1,000 responses from experts, healthcare workers, and patients. Reports showed pharmacists are under pressure to provide the drug to those battling addiction, forcing MHRA’s hand.
Help and Alternatives Available
If you’ve been taking codeine linctus long-term, Dr Cave urges you to speak to your doctor about tapering off safely.
- Support services like Talk to FRANK and NHS resources are ready to help with codeine addiction.
- Pharmacists will continue to offer expert advice and recommend safer, non-codeine cough remedies.
Industry Backs New Rules
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society and PAGB have voiced strong support. Professor Claire Anderson called it “a positive move to protect patient safety.” Michelle Riddalls from PAGB promised the industry remains committed to safe medicine use.
Patients are warned against buying codeine linctus outside pharmacies—it’s unsafe and illegal. Stick to prescriptions and advice from healthcare pros.
MHRA’s move sends a clear message: public safety comes first. Say goodbye to easy codeine cough syrup and hello to safer cough relief!
