Top Cop Nick Adderley Faces Fresh Fraud Probe
The scandal rocking Northamptonshire’s suspended chief constable, Nick Adderley, just got messier. The fraud investigation has now spilled over into Staffordshire Police, where Adderley once served as assistant chief constable from 2015 to 2018. The probe centres on alleged fraud involving police vehicle maintenance during his time there.
IOPC Steps In – Two Officers Under Fire
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) officially hit Adderley and another former Staffordshire officer with misconduct papers on February 20. This comes ahead of Adderley’s looming misconduct hearing in Northamptonshire in May, where he faces charges over breaches of honesty and integrity.
Both officers remain suspended as the criminal investigation unfolds under IOPC direction. Staffordshire Police declined to comment, citing the ongoing inquiry.
Medal Scandal Sparks Deeper Scrutiny
Adderley was first suspended in October after it emerged he wore Falklands War medals he wasn’t entitled to at a national police awards event. Police Commissioner Stephen Mold referred the case to the IOPC after discovering discrepancies in Adderley’s military and naval career claims.
Despite Adderley’s assertion he reached the rank of commander and served from 1981 to 1992, official records don’t back this up. In fact, during the period he claimed to be in naval service, he was reportedly running a pub in the Wirral.
Misconduct Hearing Postponed – Salary Still Paid
Adderley’s misconduct hearing, originally set for last week, has been pushed back to the end of May due to time constraints. Though he retired from Northamptonshire Police in 2022, he was re-hired by Commissioner Mold and continues to draw his salary pending the outcome.
Attempts to get a response from Adderley have so far been unsuccessful.
