Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect following a tragic incident in Bradford where a 27-year-old mother was fatally stabbed in broad daylight. The suspect, identified as Habibur Masum, 25, from the Oldham area, is wanted in connection with the appalling attack that occurred in the Westgate area of Bradford city centre yesterday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying ordeal, stating that the victim was stabbed “four to five times” in the neck while shopping with a friend. Shockingly, the young mother was pushing her baby son in a pram at the time of the assault.
CCTV images released by the police depict Masum, described as an Asian man of slim build, wearing a distinctive duffle coat with three large horizontal lines of grey, white, and black, along with light grey tracksuit bottoms and maroon trainers. Reports also suggest he may have been seen wearing a grey hoodie with the hood up. Masum is believed to have connections to the Burnley and Chester areas.
The scene unfolded outside a convenience store, where the victim, of Pakistani descent, was waiting for her friend who had entered the shop. Witnesses described frantic attempts to resuscitate the victim, with Geo Khan, 69, a local shop owner, recalling his efforts to save her life. Despite their best efforts, the woman succumbed to her injuries, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Enquiry Team has urged the public not to approach Masum if spotted but to immediately contact emergency services. She emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “A young woman has lost her life in the most awful circumstances, and we have extensive inquiries ongoing to locate and arrest the man responsible.
The incident has prompted significant concern in the local community, with reassurance patrols and an increased police presence expected in the area. Political figures, including Bradford City ward councillors and MP Naz Shah, have expressed their shock and condolences to the victim’s family and friends, urging anyone with information to come forward.
As the investigation continues, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to ensure the swift apprehension of the suspect and justice for the victim and her loved ones.
For any individuals with relevant information or dashcam footage, West Yorkshire Police urge them to come forward and assist in their inquiries.
