Animal rights activists have directed their ire towards television personality Jeremy Clarkson and his Hawkstone Brewery after allegations surfaced that Clarkson permitted a hunt, previously linked to animal cruelty offenses, access to his property.
Protesters descended upon the brewery located in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, wielding banners with messages such as “Jezza, hands off me badgers” and “Stop those dirty hunts.” The demonstration was organized by Three Counties Hunt Saboteurs and Gloucestershire Badger Office in response to Clarkson’s reported association with The Heythrop Hunt, a group accused of violating the 2004 Hunting Act.
Clarkson, known for his outspoken views, particularly against foxes and badgers, has drawn criticism from activists for allegedly allowing hunting activities on his land. Lynn Sawyer of Three Counties Hunt Saboteurs remarked, “Clarkson is openly outspoken about his hatred for both foxes and badgers and seemingly is intentionally ignorant about the behaviors and impacts of both species.”
A spokesperson for Action Against Foxhunting joined the fray, asserting, “Jeremy Clarkson does diddly squat to protect wildlife,” during the protest staged on Wednesday. The campaigners later delivered a letter outlining their grievances and urging Clarkson to reconsider his stance on fox hunting and badger persecution.
While Clarkson has denied any wrongdoing, stating he was not involved in filling badger setts on his property, he has faced scrutiny from animal rights groups. Responding to accusations, Clarkson labeled the activists as “not very bright.”
In defense, The Heythrop Hunt maintained that their activities adhere to the law, conducting “trail hunting” in compliance with regulations. They emphasized that allegations made by activists were unfounded attempts to halt a legal and regulated pursuit.
Diddly Squat Farm and Hawkstone Brewery, owned by Clarkson, have yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the controversy.
As the debate over wildlife protection and hunting practices continues, Clarkson finds himself embroiled in a contentious issue with fervent activists demanding action.
