Metropolitan Police Officer Found Guilty of Assault During Fare Evasion Operation

In a significant development, Metropolitan Police officer PC Perry Lathwood has been found guilty of assaulting a woman during a fare evasion operation in Croydon back in July 2023.

The verdict was delivered following a one-day trial at the City of London Magistrates’ Court, with proceedings culminating at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.

Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist expressed deep concern, stating, “This verdict represents a major setback in our efforts to rebuild trust with Londoners. We extend our sincere apologies to the affected woman and the broader community.”

The incident, captured on video, escalated into a traumatic situation for a mother and her child. Despite the conviction, the Met pledges continued support for its officers, emphasising their confidence to act decisively within their powers.

Regarding the officer’s criminal conviction, an accelerated misconduct hearing will be considered promptly. However, the Met refrains from initiating such a hearing until it learns whether PC Lathwood will appeal the verdict.

In response to this incident, the Met has ceased its involvement in supporting Transport for London fare evasion operations. Nevertheless, officers remain vigilant on the bus network, addressing violent crime.

Assistant Commissioner Twist reaffirmed the Met’s commitment to transforming its culture, fostering empathy, integrity, respect, courage, and accountability across the entire organization.

Sentencing for PC Lathwood is scheduled for June 14.
