Former AFC Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly has completed a move to Newcastle United, reuniting with his former boss Eddie Howe. The 25-year-old left-back spent five successful years at the Cherries and is now set to wear the iconic No. 25 shirt at St James’ Park.

In an exclusive interview with the club’s website, Kelly expressed his excitement about joining the Magpies: “It’s amazing to be coming here. I know how big the club is and how much it means to all the fans, and I just want to hit the ground running and get to work.”

Kelly also praised the city of Newcastle, highlighting the contrast between city life and the countryside. “It wasn’t a hard decision for me to come here. Working with the gaffer previously, I know what he wants from his players and how he wants them to play. With what I can bring, it just makes sense. I can’t wait to get started.”

Howe’s Strategic Move

Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, has swooped to sign Kelly for a second time. Alex Keble, football analyst, explains how the versatile defender will fit into Newcastle’s squad. Kelly’s performances in the 2023/24 season helped Andoni Iraola’s side exceed expectations, finishing 12th in the league.

With injuries plaguing the Magpies’ defence last season—Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Kieran Trippier sidelined—Howe aims to strengthen the backline. Only two defenders managed over 30 matches: Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. Kelly’s arrival provides much-needed depth and experience.
