Met Police Battles London’s Gun Crime Crisis
The Metropolitan Police face a tough challenge as nearly half of London shootings remain unsolved—despite boasting their highest prosecution rate in over a decade. With 52% of shooting cases leading to prosecution, almost half still go cold. Witnesses’ fear and victims opting for vigilante justice are major hurdles.
Crime Gangs Crackdown Sees Firearms Offences Plunge
The Met is hitting back hard, smashing serious crime rings and slashing firearm offences to a 15-year low. Last year, officers seized 386 illegal guns—averaging more than one a day.
Since March 2023, gun offences have dropped from 196 to 145. Firearm-related murders have also fallen over the past three years, signalling hard-won ground in London’s fight against gun violence.
Specialist Units Use Tech and Intelligence to Track Guns
Met’s specialist officers combine data analysis, forensics, and targeted raids to hunt down illegal shooters and their networks. They’re pushing into communities to gather intelligence and conducting searches to disrupt criminal hauls.
Targeted crackdowns in Harrow, Brent, and Barnet have wiped out firearms murders since 2020, a drastic change from earlier years. Down in South East London, gun offences have plunged by 44%, thanks to focused police action.
Mass Arrests and Seizures Show Met’s Resolve
A recent blitz in Westminster, backed by local council, led to 51 arrests and the confiscation of guns, drugs, and criminal cash. Met Commander Paul Brogden warns:
“Guns destroy lives and communities. Every shooting reminds us of our duty to erase illegal firearms. We remain determined to build trust and relentlessly go after those involved in gun crime.”
The Met’s tough stance proves London’s war on gun crime is far from over—but the momentum is building.
