Wirral’s James Jones Bags RAC Patrol of the Year at Silverstone
James Jones from the Wirral has scooped the top prize at the RAC’s national awards, picking up the coveted ‘Patrol of the Year’ title at the prestigious ceremony held at Silverstone – the very heart of British motor racing.
Beating 1,600 Patrols with Top-Notch Service
Covering the Wirral and Cheshire, James was chosen from over 1,600 RAC patrols for his standout breakdown assistance and exceptional customer service. His quick and smooth help gets drivers back on the road fast, earning him widespread praise.
From Post Office Manager to RAC Star Mechanic
After a decade in customer service, including managing a Post Office, James switched gears in 2016. Armed with a Level Three Motor Vehicle and Maintenance apprenticeship, the 35-year-old turned his love for tinkering with cars into a second career. “Becoming a mechanic was a natural next step,” James said. “It lets me mix my hobby with my people skills.”
His patrol team manager said: “James is a vital and outstanding member of our team, always putting business and members first over personal gain. He’s not just great roadside; he’s improved processes for our RAC Mobile Mechanics, making vehicle repairs at customers’ homes run smoothly.”
The Prize: A Flashy RAC Ford Transit with ‘P1 RAC’ Plates
The big reward for James? Driving around in a brand-new RAC Ford Transit van decked out in the iconic orange livery, complete with the highly sought-after number plate ‘P1 RAC’.
James said: “Meeting customers and helping solve their problems is the best part of the job. It’s been intense waiting to hear if I’d won, so I was thrilled and relieved to get the news. It’s brilliant to have your hard work recognised!”
Other Regional RAC Stars Shine
While James took the national crown, four others earned regional honours:
- Steven Webster – Northern Patrol of the Year
- Richard Heathcock – Eastern Patrol of the Year
- Allan Pett – Southern Patrol of the Year
- Nik Rowles – Western Patrol of the Year
