Lorry Driver Jailed After Drug-Fuelled Horror Crash on A47

A lorry driver has been locked up for two years after a terrifying crash on the A47 near Wisbech. Anthony Campbell, 55, from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, was nearly twice the legal drug-drive limit when his 44-tonne HGV careered into an oncoming Mercedes on January 3.

‘Unbelievable Recklessness’ Causes Deadly Collision

Campbell swerved into the path of the Mercedes, causing a devastating collision that seriously injured the occupants. Police found he had smoked cannabis before taking to the wheel — his blood tested nearly double the legal limit at 3.7 mcg per litre, while the legal limit is just 2 mcg.

PC Boris Kahn from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit slammed Campbell’s actions. He said, “Campbell displayed unbelievable recklessness and ignorance in getting behind the wheel after smoking cannabis. It is nothing short of a miracle that the driver and passenger in the Mercedes are still here today.”

Victims: ‘I Thought I Was Going to Die’

The Mercedes driver, a 33-year-old man from Birmingham, escaped with minor injuries. But the passenger, 38, suffered serious facial injuries and was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for surgery.

“When I was trapped in the car at the scene of the crash, I thought I was going to die. I can’t believe someone would be so stupid as to drive a 44-tonne lorry with drugs in their system,” the passenger said.

Justice Served at Peterborough Crown Court

Campbell pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Last week at Peterborough Crown Court, he was sentenced to two years behind bars and banned from driving for four years.

He was arrested at the scene after failing a roadside drugs test, highlighting the deadly risks of driving high.

PC Kahn added, “Anyone who drives after taking illegal drugs is putting people’s lives at risk, and it is completely unacceptable.”

Campbell’s reckless drug-driving crash serves as a stark warning about road safety and responsible driving. Lives have been shattered — and justice has been delivered.
