New Labour MP Lauren Edwards Apologises Over Offensive Old Tweets

Fresh-faced Labour MP for Rochester and Strood, Lauren Edwards, is in hot water after offensive tweets she posted more than a decade ago resurfaced online. The most damaging tweet, from 2009, used foul and racist language targeting Estonians — sparking outrage and furious backlash.

Shock Tweet from 2009 Ignites Fury

The incendiary tweet from July 2009 read: “I want these f****** Estonian r****ds out of my flat now!” It was dug up by a user on X (formerly Twitter) who mocked Labour, captioning it “Starmer’s ‘high quality candidates’ update.” The tweet spread like wildfire, re-shared over 130 times before Edwards deleted it.

Back then, Edwards worked as a parliamentary researcher for Barbara Keeley, the MP for Worsley and Eccles South. Since her election on July 4 as one of Kent’s 11 new Labour MPs, Edwards also serves on Medway Council, a position she’s held since December 2021.

MP Issues Sincere Apology Amid Backlash

Facing fierce criticism, Edwards took to X to apologise. She said: “I have recently been made aware of a small number of tweets that I posted on Twitter from over a decade ago, which I now deeply regret. They were a significant error of judgment on my part, and I apologise wholeheartedly.”

Edwards pledged to champion unity and respect going forward. “Since becoming a local councillor and more recently an MP, I have seen first-hand the importance of bringing communities together and working with tolerance and respect for all in our society. I pledge to use my platform to continue that important work and dedicate myself to serving all residents of Rochester and Strood.”

Labour’s Zero-Tolerance on Racism Under Scrutiny

The scandal has stirred deeper questions about Labour’s stance on racism. Social media users challenged whether leader Keir Starmer will stick to his zero-tolerance policy as more problematic tweets from 2011 surface, including a dismissive comment on a “halal Pakistani Chinese Grill place” and an altercation with a homeless man.

Edwards has since restricted who can comment on her posts and disabled comments on some tweets, fuelling even more debate.

All eyes are now on the Labour leadership to see if any further action will be taken and how they plan to handle this embarrassing storm.
