South Shields Gang Jailed for Torture and Blackmail
Nine men have been locked up for brutally torturing and blackmailing three victims at a South Shields garage. The gang lured their targets to a lock-up on Fowler Street on September 18 last year, then held them captive and subjected them to terrifying violence. They used brutal tools like a blowtorch and spade to inflict extreme pain, demanding huge sums of money from the victims and their families.
Brutal Ordeal in Lock-Up
The victims suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital after the ordeal. Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team (MIT) acted fast, arresting nine suspects across the North East. They faced multiple charges including false imprisonment, blackmail, and affray.
Guilty Pleas and Prison Sentences
In April, seven offenders admitted to false imprisonment and blackmail at Newcastle Crown Court. Two others pleaded guilty to affray in June. Sentencing has been handed down this month:
- Craig Seales, 38, Rembrandt Avenue: 10 years 4 months
- Daniel Lake, 33, Landseer Gardens: 11 years 8 months plus 28 months on extended licence
- Samantha Olsen, 36, Sheridan Road: 8 years 6 months
- Jonathon Ferguson, 31, Quarry Lane: 8 years 6 months
- Iain Sutherland, 34, Marigold Walk: 9 years 6 months
- Kasim Thompson, 35, Cedar Grove: 9 years
- Grant Maclean, 25, Bluebell Way: 9 years 3 months
- Jonathon Mason, 35, Pine Avenue: 15 months
- Liam Price, 30, Oak Avenue: 15 months
Police Praise and Ongoing Crackdown
Detective Inspector Mark Atherton, who led the probe, called the case a “terrifying ordeal” for the victims. He added, “This stemmed from organised crime tied to drug dealing, with offenders aiming to punish and intimidate. The violence was sustained and significant.”
DI Atherton praised the victims’ bravery and the teamwork between specialist detectives and the North East CPS Complex Casework Unit, which secured the convictions.
The investigation was part of Operation Sentinel, Northumbria Police’s drive against serious organised crime. The force remains committed to dismantling criminal gangs and delivering justice.
