Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were deployed to tackle a fire at a residential block of flats on Mizzen Street in Barking. The fire broke out in a four-roomed flat on the sixth floor of the seven-storey building, causing significant damage.
London Fire Brigade led around 50 residents to safety during the incident. Two people, an adult man and an adult woman, were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service for treatment.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight, with the first emergency call received at 12.46am. London Fire Brigade’s 999 Control Officers received over ten calls about the fire and quickly mobilised crews from Barking, East Ham, Plaistow, and other nearby stations. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 1.48am
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with authorities working to determine what led to the blaze.
A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade praised the quick response of both the Control Officers and the crews involved, stating, “Our teams worked efficiently to ensure the safety of all residents in the building and to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible.
Residents are reminded to ensure smoke alarms are fitted and tested regularly and to always follow safety advice in the event of a fire.
