Fire Service Fallout: Shropshire’s top brass rocked as Assistant Chief Fire Officer Adam Matthews quits immediately amid WhatsApp scandal.
Scandal Sparks Shake-Up
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is reeling after Assistant Chief Fire Officer Adam Matthews resigned with immediate effect. The dramatic exit follows an independent probe into offensive and misogynistic WhatsApp messages leaked to ITN back in April.
Matthews wasn’t alone in the spotlight. Chief Fire Officer Simon Hardiman also faced the investigation, but unlike Matthews, Hardiman is back on the job — albeit with a written warning and compulsory training.
Hardiman Stays, But Sparks Outrage
Despite the backlash, the fire authority’s chair backed Hardiman’s return, saying, “I am pleased CFO Hardiman will now be coming back to work.”
But not everyone’s happy. Women in the Fire Service (WFS) slammed the decision, branding the leaked messages “abhorrent” and calling the inquiry’s findings “astonishing.” On LinkedIn, WFS demanded urgent culture change and plans to meet the Fire Minister to push for reforms.
Fire Service Faces Wider Crisis
This episode has blown the lid off deep-rooted issues in UK fire services. Calls are growing louder for systemic overhaul to stamp out sexism, promote professionalism, and build a truly inclusive workplace for everyone.
With Shropshire’s scandal bringing national scrutiny, firefighters and officials alike are under pressure to clean up the culture and restore public trust.
