A man has died and three others have been injured following an explosion at a block of flats in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

The explosion, which occurred on Sunday evening at a property in Kellie Place, was declared a major incident by Police Scotland and emergency services. The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was inside the property at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Neill Drummond of Police Scotland said that the investigation into the cause of the explosion was still ongoing. “We are still working to establish the full circumstances of what happened at this property,” Drummond said. “However, we can confirm that one male has passed away. Our inquiries to confirm his identity and provide his next of kin with all the necessary support they may require are ongoing.”

Three other individuals were injured in the incident and were taken to Forth Valley Royal Infirmary for treatment. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The explosion caused severe damage to the block of flats, with images showing a badly damaged roof and debris scattered across the area. Eleven fire engines, including specialist units, were sent to the scene by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who also deployed specialist urban search and rescue units and a heavy rescue unit.

Alloa Town Hall has been opened as a respite centre for the occupants of the affected flats while gas and electrical checks are being carried out. Police Scotland stated that those whose homes are not deemed safe to return to will be provided with alternative accommodation.

Crews are working with emergency service partners to make the area safe,” a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said.

A number of road closures were implemented, including along the A907, B9096, Kellie Place, and Tullibody Road. While some closures are now in the process of being lifted, further utility work may result in additional closures, according to police.

Police Scotland and emergency services received the initial report of the explosion and fire at approximately 18:00 on Sunday, 6 October. Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area while work to secure the site continues.
