Storm Ashley Set to Batter Ireland and the UK with Fierce Winds This Weekend
Met Éireann has named a powerful low-pressure system Storm Ashley, sweeping through the Republic of Ireland and heading to the UK on Sunday and Monday. Expect heavy rain and gusty winds as the storm barrels northeastwards, striking early Sunday morning.
Severe Weather Warnings in Place
The Met Office has issued Yellow National Severe Weather Warnings for strong winds from 3am Sunday until midday Monday. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson warned:
“Storm Ashley will bring strong winds for most of the UK on Sunday before it clears on Monday, with a chance of disruption across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northwest England, and West Wales.
“Western Scotland faces especially severe gusts of 70-80mph on Sunday afternoon and evening in exposed areas, with widespread gusts of 50-60mph elsewhere. Combined with high spring tides, these winds could cause significant disruption.”
Wisson urged the public to keep updated with the latest forecasts as the storm approaches.
Travel Chaos Ahead: Stay Alert
Ashleigh Robson, Head of Transport Resilience at Transport Scotland, predicts widespread travel disruption during the October school holidays:
“Storm Ashley will impact travel across Scotland on Sunday and Monday. Families and commuters should watch for cross-border updates.”
She warned of hazardous conditions including fallen trees, debris on roads, and tricky driving due to heavy rain. Freight lorries and HGVs will face particular challenges. Ferry, rail, and flights could also be hit, with possible cancellations.
Passengers are advised to check with their transport operators for the latest information. For road updates, visit Traffic Scotland.
What’s Next? Storm Ashley to Ease Early Next Week
The storm is expected to move eastward by Monday, leaving behind scattered showers and some sunny spells. But next week looks unsettled with further rain likely in parts of the UK.
