Tragic Stabbing Claims Young Footballer’s Life in Clerkenwell
Tributes are pouring in for Abdul-Latif Pouget, a promising 20-year-old footballer stabbed near Farringdon station. The left-winger for Zaza FC in the Barnet Sunday Football League was found wounded on Back Hill, Clerkenwell, on the evening of October 18.
Shock After Stabbing Mistaken for Moped Crash
Police first thought they were responding to a moped accident. But they soon discovered Abdul-Latif had been stabbed. Rushed to hospital, he fought for his life but sadly died three days later on October 21. His family is receiving support from specialist officers.
Zaza FC Mourns ‘Gentle, Quiet’ Star
Duygu Ozen, club secretary of Zaza FC where Abdul-Latif played since age 14, described him as “cool-headed” and “kind-hearted”.
“Football was his ambition. He was just very gentle, a quiet guy who would do no wrong to anyone. I remember when I first saw him six years ago, he was very shy and didn’t like to speak up much,” she said.
Duygu added the player had a close bond with teammates and manager Deniz, who remains devastated. “You wouldn’t expect anything to happen to him because he was in his own world.” The team was “absolutely devastated” at the news.
Zaza FC released a heartfelt tribute: “You will be missed but never forgotten. You have captured a place in our hearts. Rest in peace.” They will hold a minute’s silence during the London Challenge Cup on October 27.
Suspect Arrested and Charged With Murder
Oguzcan Dereli, 26, from Islington, was arrested on October 20 and charged with Abdul-Latif’s murder the next day. He appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on October 22.
Superintendent Jack Rowlands of Camden police said:
“A young man has tragically died in this incident, and our thoughts go out to the victim’s friends and family. We moved quickly to arrest and charge the suspect. The community is in shock, but we’re determined to bring justice and continue supporting the local neighbourhood during this difficult time.”
