Three Jailed in Major Southeast London Phone Theft Crackdown

South East London’s Metropolitan Police have smashed a mobile phone snatching gang, securing convictions against three suspects linked to 35 robberies in Bermondsey and Greenwich.

Gang’s High-Speed Phone Snatches Busted

The operation uncovered a terrifying trend: criminals on electric motorbikes hurtling at pedestrians to snatch phones. The police recovered 32 stolen devices worth over £20,000, returning 30 of them to their rightful owners.

Sentences Delivered

  • Kie Joyce, 21, from SE16, was locked up for 3.5 years on charges including conspiracy to steal and dangerous driving.
  • A 16-year-old boy received a 6-month sentence at the Central Criminal Court for similar offences.
  • Another 16-year-old was ordered to a 9-month supervision plus curfew and a £425 compensation payment at South London Magistrates’ Court.

Police Ramp Up Tech and Patrols to Fight Phone Crime

Police Constable Alex Earley said, “This conviction sends a clear message: we’re tackling the fears and crimes affecting our communities daily.”

The Met’s A New Met for London initiative uses advanced CCTV and data-driven patrols in hotspot areas to deter thieves and keep locals safe.

Commander Owain Richards added, “Mobile phone theft isn’t just petty crime – it’s invasive and violent. We’re working with tech firms to block stolen phones from being reused, crippling the black market.”

Stay Alert, Stay Safe

The Met urges Londoners to report phone thefts immediately – dial 999 in emergencies, or 101 and online for non-emergencies. More tips on preventing phone theft are available on the Met’s website.
