A 12-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being struck by a falling tree branch while walking with friends in Banstead, south London. Brooke Etherington, who was described by her family as a “shining light,” was walking along a grassy footpath in Grove Place near Carshalton Road around 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, when the heavy branches fell and trapped her beneath them.
Witnesses, including residents from a nearby traveller estate, rushed to assist, attempting to lift the tree and perform CPR, but Brooke succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service, responded promptly, but it took between 90 minutes and two hours to free her from beneath the branches.
Brooke’s family has since launched a fundraising page in her memory and announced a community memorial. On Wednesday, November 13, they plan to gather at Banstead Park at 6 p.m. for a lantern and balloon release in honour of Brooke’s 13th birthday.
Tributes have poured in on social media, with Brooke’s cousin describing her as “one of a kind” and friends recalling her “heart of gold.” One friend wrote, “I love you so much, you will never be forgotten, you will always be my best friend.”
Police have closed off the footpath where the incident occurred, collecting evidence to determine the circumstances. A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brooke’s death is not being treated as suspicious and that a report will be prepared for the coroner.
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne expressed condolences, saying, “The thoughts of our crews and staff across the entire Brigade are with the child’s family at this difficult time.”
