IOPC Launches Investigation into Death of 17-Year-Old Girl Struck on M5

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation following the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl who was struck by a vehicle on the M5 near Taunton on Monday night.

An IOPC spokesperson confirmed that Avon and Somerset Police had informed them of the incident, reporting that the girl was being transported in a police vehicle to custody when she exited the vehicle shortly before the fatal collision occurred.

The IOPC has deployed investigators to the police’s post-incident procedure to begin gathering evidence to understand the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

“Our sympathies are with the girl’s loved ones and everyone affected by her death,” the spokesperson stated, emphasizing the gravity of the incident.

The IOPC investigation aims to provide a thorough and impartial review of the events leading up to the collision, with a focus on ensuring transparency and accountability. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
