Fire at Royal Free Hospital Recreation Building in Hampstead

 

A fire broke out today in a recreation building on the Royal Free Hospital site on Fleet Road, Hampstead, prompting a major emergency response from the London Fire Brigade.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were dispatched to the scene after the alarm was raised at 11:15 AM. The blaze, which affected part of the building’s roof, was tackled using one of the Brigade’s 32-meter ladders to combat the fire from above.

Traffic Disruption in the Area

The incident has caused significant traffic disruption in Hampstead as firefighting crews remain on-site to ensure the area is safe. Roads surrounding Fleet Road are currently congested, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Fire Under Control

The fire was brought under control by 12:51 PM, with firefighters from Kentish Town, West Hampstead, Paddington, and nearby stations working together to contain the blaze.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said:
“We responded quickly to reports of a fire at the Royal Free Hospital site and managed to prevent the blaze from spreading further. The situation is now under control, but crews will remain on site for some time to ensure safety.”
