A fire erupted today at the Royal Free Hospital’s recreation building on Fleet Road, Hampstead, sparking a huge emergency operation by the London Fire Brigade.

Eight Engines and 60 Firefighters Battle Roof Fire

At 11:15 AM, flames broke out, affecting part of the building’s roof. The London Fire Brigade scrambled eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters to the scene. Using a towering 32-metre ladder, crews tackled the blaze from above, preventing it from spreading further.

Traffic Chaos Hits Hampstead

The fire caused major traffic headaches in Hampstead. Surrounding roads near Fleet Road are gridlocked as firefighters work hard to secure the area. Commuters are urged to steer clear and find alternative routes.

Fire Under Control, But Investigation Continues

By 12:51 PM, firefighters from Kentish Town, West Hampstead, Paddington, and nearby stations had brought the fire under control. While the blaze is now contained, crews remain on site to ensure the area is safe.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. An investigation is underway.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We responded quickly to reports of a fire at the Royal Free Hospital site and managed to prevent the blaze from spreading further. The situation is now under control, but crews will remain on site for some time to ensure safety.”
