Portsmouth and South East Brace for 75mph Winds on New Year’s Day
Residents in Portsmouth, Hampshire, and across the South East are being warned to batten down the hatches. A Met Office yellow wind warning is in place, with gusts of up to 75mph set to lash the region on New Year’s Day, threatening disruption far and wide.
When and Where – Wind Warning Details
The warning kicks off at 9am on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, running through until 6am on Thursday, January 2. Coastal areas and inland spots alike will feel the full force as a deep low-pressure system sweeps across the UK from the west.
What the Met Office Says
“A deep area of low pressure is expected to cross the UK from the west, bringing a spell of very strong winds. Gusts of 65-75 mph are likely around coasts and hills, especially in the south and west, with 50-60 mph gusts likely fairly widely inland.”
Travel Chaos Expected – How to Stay Safe
- Roads: High-sided vehicles should be extra cautious on exposed routes. Expect hazardous conditions for all drivers.
- Rail: Train delays and cancellations likely due to fallen debris and poor weather.
- Ferries: Crossings could be delayed or axed. Rough seas are forecasted.
Emergency services are urging residents to secure garden furniture, bins, and any loose items that might turn into dangerous projectiles. Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, steer clear of large trees and construction zones, and stay indoors during the worst of the winds.
