Tottenham Teenager Begins Dubai Jail Sentence Over Relationship with 17-Year-Old

An 18-year-old from Tottenham, Marcus Fakana, has started serving a one-year prison sentence in Dubai after being convicted of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.

Fakana, who had traveled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with his parents in late August, reportedly engaged in a “holiday romance” with another Londoner, who has since turned 18. However, upon discovering photos and messages related to the relationship, the girl’s mother reported the matter to Dubai police, leading to Fakana’s arrest at his hotel.

Surrender and Sentence

The campaign group Detained in Dubai, which advocates for individuals facing legal challenges in the UAE, confirmed that Fakana handed himself in to begin his sentence.

In a statement shared by the group, Fakana expressed gratitude to his supporters, saying:

“I’m grateful for all the people who helped by donating to me and my family. Goodbye, Marcus.F.”

Concerns Raised Over Imprisonment

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, raised concerns about the potential impact of imprisonment on the teenager:

“It wasn’t easy to find the words to say to him as he surrendered his freedom. We remain deeply worried about the impact of Dubai prison on an 18-year-old’s life.”

Strict Laws in Dubai

Under UAE law, any sexual relationship involving a minor under the age of 18 is considered a serious criminal offence, regardless of consent. Convictions for such offences often carry significant penalties, reflecting the country’s strict moral and legal codes.

Public Support and Advocacy

Fakana’s case has gained widespread attention, prompting public outcry and support:

  • A Change.org petition advocating for greater government assistance has amassed over 40,000 signatures.
  • A GoFundMe campaign titled “Help Bring Marcus Home” has raised over £35,000, including a £500 donation from Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington.

Government Response

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is providing consular support to Fakana and his family. An FCDO spokesperson said:

“We are supporting a British man in the UAE and are in contact with his family.”

However, the UK government emphasized that it cannot interfere with Dubai’s judicial process.

Hopes for a Pardon

Fakana is reportedly hoping for a pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, though it remains uncertain whether this will be granted.

Legal Implications for Tourists

This case highlights the significant cultural and legal differences between the UAE and the UK, emphasizing the need for British citizens to understand and adhere to local laws while traveling abroad.

Fakana’s sentencing continues to fuel debates about the complexities of international legal systems and the support available to British nationals facing legal challenges overseas.
