Pedestrian Dies Following New Year’s Eve Collision in Sandown on the Isle of Wight

A man in his 40s has tragically died in hospital after being struck by a car in Sandown on New Year’s Eve, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on 31 December 2024 at the roundabout connecting Avenue Road, High Street, and Culver Parade. Emergency services were alerted following reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle, described as a grey Nissan Qashqai.

Incident Details

Earlier reports suggested the man, believed to have been intoxicated, was running in and out of traffic near the area. The Qashqai, driven by a 73-year-old man from Brading, reportedly travelled from the Esplanade and onto the roundabout before colliding with the pedestrian, who was in the middle of the road.

The victim was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight and later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, the man succumbed to his injuries earlier this week.

Investigation

The driver of the Nissan was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and released under investigation following questioning. Police have not yet confirmed whether the driver has been re-arrested or if the charges have been upgraded following the pedestrian’s death.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary continues to investigate the incident and has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
