Government triples rough sleeper funding to £30 million ahead of harsh winter
Massive Cash Boost to Help Rough Sleepers
The government has slashed the cold this winter for rough sleepers by tripling the Rough Sleeping Winter Pressures Fund from £10 million to a whopping £30 million. Over 280 councils – including every London borough – will get a share of the extra cash to provide emergency beds, hot meals, and medical care. This is aimed at giving rough sleepers crucial relief when temperatures drop.
Targeted Help for the Most Vulnerable
- Funding focused on veterans, care leavers, and domestic abuse victims
- Outreach tackling substance abuse and boosting access to jobs
- Addressing deadly health risks—rough sleepers face up to 12 times higher risk of early death from heart and lung diseases
Minister Sounds Alarm on Homelessness Crisis
“Behind every sad rough sleeping statistic, there is a person who has been let down by the system for far too long. This government is more determined than ever to turn the tide on years of failure to properly invest in our frontline services,” declared Homelessness Minister Rushanara Ali.
This boost is part of the government’s broader Plan for Change, aimed at tackling the wider housing crisis and eradicating homelessness for good.
More Cash and Bold Moves to End Homelessness
- £185 million for Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grants
- £37 million for the Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme ensuring longer-term housing and mental health support
- A new Inter-Ministerial Group to attack root causes like healthcare gaps, justice reform, and education improvements
Stronger Tenant Rights and Housing Supply
- Ending Section 21 “no fault” evictions with the Renters’ Rights Bill
- Fixing the Right to Buy scheme so councils keep sale proceeds to build affordable homes
- An extra £500 million pumped into the Affordable Homes Programme
Big Bucks, Bigger Hope
With rough sleeping on the rise, these new measures provide urgent winter support and a long-term plan. Housing investment now tops £5 billion this year, marking a serious push to raise living standards and tackle the housing crisis head-on.
