76-Year-Old Bus Driver on Trial for Killing Pensioner in Woolwich

Fatal Crash Near Woolwich Arsenal

A 76-year-old bus driver, Ozdemir Zia, faces charges over the tragic death of 83-year-old Edna McLean. The pensioner was struck as she crossed Vincent Road near Woolwich Arsenal station on September 11, 2021.

The collision happened just after 10:30 a.m., with Mrs McLean suffering devastating brain injuries. She was airlifted to hospital but sadly died two days later without regaining consciousness.

A witness told the court they heard the crash and saw Mrs McLean’s body thrown into the air.

Prosecution: Driver Failed to Check Blind Spot

Prosecutor Nadeem Holland told jurors Zia failed to properly check for pedestrians before turning onto Vincent Road. CCTV footage showed the moment of impact and bystanders rushing to aid the injured pensioner.

Traffic experts testified Zia’s view was blocked by another bus and a pillar inside his vehicle, creating a dangerous blind spot. But prosecutors argued the driver could have adjusted his position to spot Mrs McLean.

“The defendant’s driving fell below the standard expected of a reasonable, careful, and competent driver,” Holland said.

He added that although Zia was not speeding, he should have slowed down more and waited for the obstruction to clear before turning.

Zia Denies Careless Driving Charge

Zia, from Kidbrooke, denies causing death by careless driving. He told police he didn’t see Mrs McLean until just before the crash and slammed the brakes immediately.

He claimed pedestrians sometimes don’t look before crossing, shifting some responsibility away from himself.

Trial Set to Continue as Road Safety Debate Rages

The trial will resume at 12 p.m. on Tuesday with further evidence expected.

The case raises tough questions about the duties of professional drivers in busy London streets and the urgent need for better road safety measures.
