County Lines Kingpin Jailed for Six Years Over Ruthless Blackmail Spree

A 56-year-old man has been slammed with a six-year prison sentence for blackmail connected to a notorious county lines drugs operation. James Sunderland, also known as “Jay Jay”, was found guilty at Brighton Crown Court on 10 January after a major probe by Sussex Police.

‘Pattern Gang’ Enforcer Behind Relentless Intimidation Campaign

Sunderland, formerly of St Leonards, played a key role in the “Pattern Gang” – a vicious county drug line network under police fire throughout 2023. The investigation exposed chilling tales of threats, coercion, and violence directed at those trapped into working for the gang.

Family Held Hostage by Fear: Victim’s Nightmare

One victim revealed how a family member was strong-armed into drug dealing to pay off a gang debt. Sunderland stalked their home, demanding cash repeatedly. Terrified for her loved ones, she borrowed thousands and even installed CCTV and kept fire extinguishers handy, fearing arson or worse.

“Sunderland threatened to throw acid in my face and warned I’d never see my family member again if I called the police,” the victim said.

He also reportedly forced the family member into his car boot and showed up up to 40 times between May and October 2023 to scare them into submission. Physical assaults took place with Sunderland’s presence confirmed during at least one attack.

Police Crack Down on County Lines Crime Wave

Detective Sergeant Jason Tuck condemned Sunderland’s ruthless tactics, saying:

“He menaced the victim and family with severe violence and terrorised them to collect payments. This case shows the brutal impact of county lines drug dealing. We will keep hunting down criminals like Sunderland.”

The landmark conviction caps months of raids against the Pattern Gang across East Sussex. Police urge anyone with information to step forward and help dismantle these dangerous city-to-countryside drug lines.
