Microlight Horror: Pilot Spirals to Death in Thick Cloud

The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has unveiled chilling details about a fatal microlight crash at Sheepbridge Industrial Estate. A 71-year-old pilot lost control after flying straight into a thick bank of cloud, killing him instantly.

The Sportstar SLM microlight took off from Coal Aston Airstrip at 7.56am on 1 September 2024. Rapidly worsening weather closed in, sending the plane into a deadly spiral.

Poor Weather Ignored – Pilot ‘Spatially Disorientated’

The AAIB confirmed visibility at takeoff was a mere 400 to 600 metres—well below safe limits for visual flying. CCTV and GPS data showed the plane made several tight right turns south of the airfield before heading towards Chesterfield. The microlight’s speed shot up to a terrifying 178 knots as it nosedived at over 5,250 feet per minute.

Despite the engine running and no mechanical faults found, the pilot, who held a UK NPPL microlight licence with about 390 hours logged but no instrument flying rating, lost control. Handwritten notes revealed he was aware of low clouds and planned the early flight to beat bad weather, but likely became spatially disorientated inside the cloud.

AAIB Slams Pilot Over Weather Misjudgement

The AAIB echoed stark Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) warnings: visual flight rules are strict “limits, not targets.” Flying into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) without proper instrument training is a deadly gamble. The report points to fresh CAA guidance on avoiding and coping with unexpected cloud encounters.

Tragic Lesson: Don’t Fly Blind

The AAIB’s blunt verdict: the crash was caused by loss of control after entering weather conditions beyond the pilot’s skill and qualifications. No faults with the plane played a part. The full investigation report was published on 2 October 2025.

This devastating accident sends a clear message to all microlight pilots: know your limits, respect the weather—and never fly blind.
