The Plymouth community is in mourning following the tragic and violent death of Claire Butler, a much-loved university lecturer. Ms. Butler, in her 40s, was named locally as the woman killed in a shocking incident on West Hoe Road on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Claire, a dedicated lecturer in adult nursing at the University of Plymouth, was remembered by her family, friends, and colleagues as a “caring, inspirational lady” with a “kind soul.” Hundreds of heartfelt tributes have flooded social media, with past students sharing their grief and recalling the deep impact she had on their lives. Many praised her exceptional teaching style, her support through difficult times, and the positive energy she brought into their lives.
One former student wrote: “Claire was my personal tutor at uni and helped me through some really tough times. She was a beautiful, kind, amazing woman. What a waste of a life. Sending love to her family and friends. RIP angel.” Another described Claire as “a beautiful soul” who inspired many nurses and aspiring nurses, adding, “You are a ray of sunshine that has now been dimmed all over the faculty of health at Plymouth University.”
Tributes continued to pour in, with students remembering Claire as “an absolute marvellous lecturer” and a “kind soul” who will be deeply missed by all who knew her. One said, “She was the kindest soul… I hope you’re in a beautiful place that brings you happiness and peace.”
Claire’s career was marked by both academic excellence and compassion. She began her career as a cardiac care unit nurse at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust before becoming a senior cardiac research nurse and trial coordinator at the University of Leicester. She then moved to the University of Plymouth, where she became a lecturer and eventually served as Associate Head of School for Internationalisation.
In addition to her academic role, Claire was a devoted mother and grandmother, and her family has expressed their devastation over her tragic loss.
The investigation into her death has led to the arrest of 53-year-old Paul Anthony Butler, Claire’s husband. He was located and arrested in Liskeard on January 23, 2025, after a manhunt was launched. Devon and Cornwall Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous contact with the victim. The IOPC has confirmed that they will assess the referral to determine whether an investigation is necessary.
As the community continues to grieve, Claire Butler is remembered not only for her professional achievements but for the lasting impression she left on everyone she met.
