In a significant development in London’s fight against violent crime, two men have been handed lengthy prison sentences following a Southwark shooting incident that shocked the local community. The attack, involving an e-scooter and resulting in serious injuries, highlights the ongoing challenges of gang-related violence in the capital.
Details of the Southwark Shooting Case
Kemar Edwards, 25, of Manthorp Road, Plumstead, and Amari Bailey, 23, of Hastings Close, Peckham, received their sentences at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, January 29. The court found them guilty of Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent, with Edwards facing additional charges related to firearm possession.
Sentences Handed Down
Edwards received an 18-year prison term with a three-year extended license, while Bailey was sentenced to 12 years with a three-year extended license. The severity of these sentences reflects the premeditated nature of the attack and its impact on public safety.
The Attack and Investigation
The incident occurred on June 24, 2023, when a 24-year-old man was targeted in Bradenham Close, Walworth. According to court proceedings, Bailey identified the victim, allegedly a rival gang member, and coordinated with Edwards, who carried out the shooting while riding an e-scooter.
The victim sustained serious injuries to his arm and knee after being shot at three times. Despite the attackers wearing disguises – Edwards in a balaclava and Bailey in a motorcycle helmet – thorough CCTV investigation led to their identification and subsequent arrest.
Police Response and Public Safety
Detective Constable John Davis from the Trident South Specialist Crime Command team praised the public’s assistance in the investigation. “The evidence provided by citizens who reported hearing the shooting was crucial in establishing Edwards’ guilt, particularly as the shots were fired in a CCTV blind spot,” he stated.
