Several schools in Hackney and Essex were placed on lockdown earlier this week following the receipt of threatening emails, prompting a swift police response. Officers carried out a thorough search of school grounds and reassured parents amid heightened concerns.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were alerted to threats made against multiple schools across the borough at around 8:30 AM on Tuesday, February 4. Officers attended at least one school in Hackney to investigate and ensure the safety of pupils and staff.
A 21-year-old man was arrested in Staffordshire on suspicion of sending communications of an indecent or offensive nature. He has since been released on bail, pending further investigation.
Schools Take Precautionary Measures
As a precaution, schools affected by the threats implemented temporary lockdowns, with some closing early while police assessed the situation. Officers conducted a full sweep of school grounds and confirmed that nothing suspicious was found.
A Met Police spokesperson said:
“Our priority is the safety of pupils and staff. We are working closely with affected schools to provide reassurance and have increased patrols in the area.”
Increased Police Presence in Hackney
To ease concerns among parents, Met officers attended the affected school at the end of the school day to speak with families. Additional patrols have also been deployed across Hackney and surrounding areas.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the police via 101, quoting reference 1483/04FEB25.
This incident comes as part of a broader national investigation, with police forces in other parts of the country also receiving similar reports. Officers are now coordinating efforts to determine the source of the emails and whether they pose an ongoing threat.
