Man Charged with Kidnap After ‘Forcing Teenage Girl into County Durham Home’

A man has been charged with kidnap after allegedly assaulting a teenage girl and forcing her into a property in Newton Aycliffe.

The incident occurred on Thursday, February 27, when police received a report that a teenager had been attacked on the street shortly before 10pm. It is claimed that the victim was then forcibly taken into a property but managed to escape and raise the alarm at a nearby address.

Following a swift police investigation, 22-year-old Matthew Hindhaugh, of Newton Aycliffe, was arrested that night. He has since been charged with kidnap, assault, possession of an offensive weapon, and non-fatal strangulation.

Hindhaugh has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court today.

Police Reassure Public

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Turner, from Durham Constabulary, described the incident as “isolated but understandably very shocking and upsetting” for the victim and her family.

He added: “Specially trained officers are currently supporting the victim and ensuring she receives the help and support she needs. A man has been charged in connection with the incident, and I would like to reassure people that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.”

Appeal for Information

Police are urging anyone with information who has not yet come forward to contact Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 450 of February 27.
